New Zealand Laser Nationals in Windy Wellington

Standard Rig action on Worser Bay NZ- Photo Chris Coad

In Oceania club and district level sailing is going on as normal thanks to low and controlled levels of COVID. In Australia the 2021 national championships had to be postponed until January 2022 but in New Zealand the 2021 Catalyst Laser Nationals were held with 94 boats at Worser Bay .

Living up to its reputation (it is not called windy Wellington for nothing) the final day saw all fleets complete 3 races in a 15 to 25 knot northerly that fortunately eased slightly as the day progressed. It was wind against tide, which gave some good waves and great downwind rides while making everyone work hard on the beats, but did prove a challenge for some resulting in a number of UFD’s .
