
American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the United States located on part of the Samoan Islands located in the South Pacific Ocean around 3,000 Km NNE of New Zealand. It has 50,000 population mostly on the main island of Tutuila with and 224 Sq Km of land area and few dozen Laser sailors in the clubs around the capital Pago Pago.
A very active group is the Sailing Association of American Samoa Inc SAASI which has 15 regularly active Laser sailors, and a few more that only come out on occasion. The Pago Pago Yacht Club is another active group. The sailor’s age range is quite broad, going from 12 to 70 years. 65% of SAASI’s fleet is female. The most competitive age group are the juniors up to 18 years old. They have 4.7, Radial, and Standard laser sailors.
SAASI held 5 regattas in 2019. The Laser class being the main event in all the regattas. The regattas are typically 4-6 races. They have a series score going to rank each sailor. The high ranking sailors are chomping at the bit to see where they stand on a world scale.
SAASI offers coaching for young sailors who are graduating from Optis as well as a competitive program for all ages and rig types. These typically hit the water more than twice a week.
